Josef Dobrowsky (Karlsbad, Bohemia 1889- Tullnerbach-Vienna, 1964) was a portrait, landscape and genre painter prominently known for his watercolors. His style was very expressive and he mostly used vivid colors. He began his art studies at the "Kunstgewerbeschule" (Vienna College of Arts and Crafts), and from 1906 to 1919, studied at the Vienna Academyof Fine Arts of under Christian Griepenkerl and Rudolf Bacher. In 1919, Josef Dobrowsky joined the Vienna Secession. His early works show the influence of Gustav Klimt, Albin Egger-Lienz, and Ferdinand Hodler.
In 1934, he became a member of the Prague Secession. From 1946 to 1963 he led a master class as a professor of painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Alfred Hrdlicka and Josef Mikl were among his pupils.
Dobrowsky received the Golden State Medal (1932), the Great Austrian State Prize (1937) and the Prize of the City of Vienna (1945). He was awarded the Grand Austrian National Prize in 1962.
His paintings are exhibited in the Austrian Gallery, the Wien (Vienna) Historical Museum as well as in the Municipal Library of Nuremberg and many other domestic and foreign museums.
